Unisys joins the trend: no president
Article Abstract:
The position of corporate president or chief operating officer is on the way out among high-tech companies, especially in larger ones that have reorganized to give their subsidiaries and divisions more individual responsibility. Corporate chairmen explain that they see no need for an extra layer of bureaucracy at the top, and prefer to appoint vice chairmen instead of presidents. Unisys Corp Chmn James A. Unruh decides not to replace outgoing Pres Reto Braun in the latest instance of this trend. Braun is leaving Unisys to become president and chief executive officer of Moore Corp. New IBM Chmn Louis V. Gerstner Jr has also decided not to appoint a president and chief operating officer, lest it imply he is not running the company. Gerstner consulted his friend GE Chmn John F. Welch Jr, who has not appointed a president during his 12 years in office, in making the decision.

Top I.B.M. issue: how, not who
Article Abstract:
As IBM prepares to appoint Louis V. Gerstner Jr as its new CEO, the more important question that confronts the ailing company is how to overcome its deep-seated problems. Sales of IBM's mainframes in the first few months of 1993 declined by as much as 50 percent, prompting analysts to increase its 1st qtr 1993 loss estimates to more than $300 million. IBM's stock slipped $3.125, to $51.125 on Mar 24, 1993. The company's financial troubles are due in part to its inability to keep up with price competition and the shift away from mainframes to microcomputers and workstations. Despite its having cut more than 100,000 from its work force, industry analysts say the company will have to cut another 100,000 jobs. Gerstner is expected to be under severe pressure to continue cutting costs and personnel.
