Universal Studios 'not for sale,' frustrated CEO says

Joseph E. Seagram and Sons Inc CEO Edgar Bronfman vehemently denies reports that the company is seeking possible acquirers nor has plans of selling Universal Studios. He expressed frustration for the emergence of these rumors, which happen to coincide with the company's annual briefing for Wall Street analysts. Bronfman is confident that the company will get over the financial trouble the studio is experiencing and predicts improved performance in the future, having control of the best assets in the leisure and entertainment field.

'Prince' for sale at Wal-Mart

DreamWorks SKG has entered into a marketing and merchandising agreement with Wal-Mart to promote DreamWork's first animated feature, "The Prince of Egypt." Wal-Mart will begin the sale on Nov. 24, 1998, of $20-gift packages that each contain a coupon exchangeable for four tickets at any theater showing the motion picture, a storybook plus a CD of songs from the film. The company, however, reported that it will not sell as many merchandise as Disney's in deference to the motion picture's religious theme.

Marketers count on Potter film for golden touch

Time Warner Inc's production of 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,' based on the book by J.K. Rowling, is projected to generate billion of dollars in revenues for a number of years. The company, which is expected to release the film by Nov 16, 2001, will spend a minimum of $100 million on the project. Time Warner is banking on the Potter character to be the next Batman or Superman, a character that will keep generating profits for a long time.
