Upstart feels growing pains
Article Abstract:
Southwest Airlines is showing some growing pains as it prepares to turn 30 years old in 2001. Its stock soared 98% in 2000. It has become the most valuable airline in the US with market capitalization of $16 billion, more than American's United's and Delta's combined. However, Southwest has begun to experience troubles such as delayed flights, tension with its 5,000 fleet service workers represented by the Transport Workers Union and an accident in Mar 2000 in Burbank, CA. In addition, it has been caught in the proposed merger between US Air Lines and US Airways.

Airline service gets critical report card
Article Abstract:
Results of an airline service study was made public on Feb 12, 2001 by the Dept of Transportation's Office of Inspector General. The documents show how airlines treat cusatomers with regard to delayed and canceled flights, refunds, fare quotes, lost bags, overbooked flights and other issues. Its 133 pages reflect a record of customer service that is wildly inconsistent. The report will provide ammunition to the industry's harshest critics who are already alarmed about record delays and compaints in 2000.
