Venezuela investigates Ford, tires

The Venezuelan consumer protection agency INDECU is investigating the actions of Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford Motor Co concerning the recall of Firestone tires in Venezuela. Bridgestone/Firestone announced that it does not intend to voluntarily recall its tires in Venezuela while Ford recommended the tire company's course of action. The Venezuelan government said it would file criminal charges against both companies if it discovers that they failed to disclose product defect information.

Nasser says design not a problem

Ford Motor CEO Jacques Nasser, on Aug 16, 2000, ruled out the issue of design that linked the company's Explorer sport-utility vehicles to Bridgestone/Firestone Inc's tire recall. The recall could affect millions of Ford vehicles, particularly the best-selling Explorers. According to Nasser, not one of the automaker's 500,000 vehicles produced with Goodyear tires was involved in a single incident during the time of the recall.

General Motors jumps into 'green' skirmish
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp Vice Chmn Harry Pearce has contradicted Ford Motor Co's claim that it will make its SUVs 25% more fuel efficient in the next five year. Pearce said that GM currently leads Ford by 4% on fuel economy among light trucks and SUVs. GM announced that it will sell its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups with a hybrid gas/electric engine beginning in 2004 making the trucks 15% more fuel efficient.
