Southwest manages a crisis
Article Abstract:
Southwest Airlines Co has successfully managed its first crisis in a 29- year corporate history with no fatal accidents. How its crisis plan worked will provide lessons for any firm that might experience the same situation. For years, the airline trained stringently handpicked teams, including family assistance teams, and studied how other firms had handled disasters. Its crisis teams got an opportunity to apply their training when a Southwest Airlines flight overshot a runway in California early in Mar 2000. The experience also prompted a review of Southwest Airlines' crisis management plan to further improve it.

American scrubs 84% of JFK flights
Article Abstract:
American Airlines canceled 84% of its flight out of JFK Airport on Feb 28, 2001, which the airline said was caused by an illegal work slowdown by its mechanics union. The move affected 141 of American's 168 domestic and international flights, and the airline has asked passengers to check their flights before going to the airport. The service disruption was reportedly the mechanics' response to American's first contract offer to the union.
