Donald McDonald, chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is seeking a third five-year term when his tenure expires in July 2006. Government sources point to an intriguing, political conflict looming over between Prime Minister John Howard and Treasurer Peter Costello, on whether to reappoint McDonald, and according to reports, a senior Liberal has said that Howard is the only senior member who would support McDonald.

It was reported by a cabinet source that McDonald's performance as ABC chairman has not been good because he failed to get a grip on the management, to inject any semblance of independence, and balance into the organization.
