WinStar to unveil wireless network
Article Abstract:
WinStar, an start-up communications company, is preparing for the national launch of a high-speed voice and data network that will use wireless technology. The company's point-to-multipoint network uses a $4,000 antenna placed on a building's roof that beams voice and data at over 10 megabits per second to a hub antenna. The antenna in turn, feeds the voice and data into a fiber optic network, bypassing the slower local phone lines. The technology, which is similar to Sprint's, is now running in Washington D.C. and may soon be offered in the top 50 US markets where the firm already owns wireless licenses.
