Windows applications widen their lead
Article Abstract:
Applications software for the Microsoft Windows graphical user interface outsold applications for the MS-DOS operating system for the first time in 1st qtr 1993. Word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation-graphics and database packages led the way, helping Windows applications garner $669 million in sales, as compared to $502 million for DOS packages. The figures indicate that people are actually using the Windows program that comes bundled with their microcomputer, even though both Windows and its applications take up a large amount of hard disk space: 15.8Mbytes just to run Windows alone. PC-Kwik's $129.95 Winmaster 1.5 software enhances Windows with a Toolbox that eases file management and manipulation. Deltapoint's $59.95 Animated Desktop for Windows adds animation and sound effects to icons and cursors. Contact Software International's new $395 Act! for Windows 1.1 contact management program is faster and now offers a word processing module.

For desktop advice, a publishing wizard
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's $139 Microsoft Publisher 2.0 is a handy desktop publishing program for those needing more functionality than Broderbund's Print Shop provides and less sophistication than Aldus Pagemaker or Quarkxpress offer. Publisher can produce everything from business cards to newsletters and includes a text editor, spell checker, text and graphics import facilities and 125 clip-art images. A Microsoft Windows program, its familiar menu bars make it easy to use right out of the box. The Page Wizard Assistant feature guides users through the creation of many standard types of publications, offering them stylistic choices and advice. Publisher runs on Windows 3.1 or later and requires at least 4Mbytes RAM and 6-13Mbytes of hard-disk space. Hi Tech Expressions' $29.95 Printpower Pro Plus program is even more of a bargain. It runs on MS-DOS, requires 640Kbytes RAM and can produce simple signs, greeting cards and calendars.
