Wired cyclists connect to computers to measure pedal power
Article Abstract:
Two companies are making strain guages for bicyclists. Cyclists use the guages to measure power they are generating as they propel their bicycle by pedaling. The technology embeds small U-shaped wires in the metal of the part under strain. As the metal flexes, a small current applied across the wire fluctuates. A cell phone-sized computer measures these variations and calculates the output in watts or joules. The guage made by Schoberer Rad Messtechnik fits out the pedal cranks with the system. Tune's system uses the rear wheel hub. Measurements at the hub are slightly less accurate than at the crank. The trade off is that a cyclist who doesn't need the system on a particular ride can easily change out the rear wheel.

Making a still point in a turning world
Article Abstract:
Still-camera arrays are in use today to help create special effects, such as frozen action in a scene filled with movement, in motion pictures and commercials. Special-effects firms like Director's Cut, Reel EFX and BUF Compagnie use arrays of cameras connected by data cable and controlled by computer, to ensure synchronization or precise sequencing of firing of the cameras. The still images are then converted into movies via splicing and software that assembles the images and stores them on digital tape or a DVD.
