The Borland barbarian's new weapon
Article Abstract:
Borland International Inc's object-oriented programming has been incorporated into the company's new product, Quattro Pro for Windows, and may help the company win an even greater market share. Borland competes against Microsoft Corp and Lotus Development Corp. Borland's new programs appeal to companies that are in the process of downsizing and are shifting from mainframes and minicomputers to networked microcomputers. This marketing strategy allows Borland to compete against Oracle Corp, Ingres and Sybase. Borland's new direction is the result of Philippe Kahn's management planning. The new software could boost sales to the $1 billion point. Borland is also offering Interbase, an object-oriented data base management system.

Article Abstract:
IBM agrees to allow Hitachi Ltd to resell IBM notebook computers in Japan under the Hitachi label. Starting in Apr 1992, Hitachi will buy at least 2,000 IBM computers a month. The notebooks, which will be similar to the IBM PS/55, will be built in Japan and will use the OADG operating system, which is a Japanese adaptation of MS-DOS. This agreement exemplifies IBM's increased interest in original equipment manufacturing (OEM) arrangements. An IBM spokesman indicates that IBM foresees a $3 billion OEM business by 1993. IBM's annual OEM business currently is valued at several hundred million dollars.
