Compaq rolls out snazzy new easy-to-use PC

Houston, TX-based Compaq Computer Corp will unveil on Jan 6, 2000, its retro-style personal computer called the Presario EZ 2000 aimed at beginners and midlevel users. The Presario is an Internet-based PC similar to Dell Computer Corp's WebPC and Apple Computer Inc's iMac but features a novel car-style 'digital dashboard' that displays a small window with a clock and a light that shows when e-mail has arrived. The price of the Presario starts at $999 including a CD-ROM drive.

Y2K, chip woes threaten PC makers' earnings
Article Abstract:
Earnings for 4th qtr 1999 of personal computer manufacturers may be lower than expected due to a worldwide shortage of computer chips and a reduction by corporations of budgets allocated for Y2K. For instance, Gateway has already announced that its revenue for the period would be lower by $150 million from lower Y2K sales and delayed chip shipments from Intel. Likewise, IBM said that its 4th qtr 1999 sales would be lower than what has been forecasted.

Get up and go: Cisco rolls out wireless Net

Cisco Systems Inc has unveiled wireless networking products for big businesses and universities. These products allow business people and students to link to the Internet at high-speeds by using laptops with Cisco's Aironet Card. Microsoft Corp and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, have deployed the technology, and hundreds of companies and colleges are testing it.
