Article Abstract:
The proposed Australian general sales tax (GST), scheduled to go into effect in July 2000, would impose taxes on union membership, contracts such as automobile leases, and employee benefits. Much of the public has little notion of the economic and social ramifications of the wide reach of the GST. The GST could have an impact on any automobile lease that runs beyond July 2000. Corporate accountants, who review company contracts, as well as individual taxpayers will be greatly affected by the GST.
