Endothelin: new discoveries and rapid progress in the clinic
Article Abstract:
The developments and progress of research concerning the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease is the main topic of discussion during the Fifth International Conference on Endothelin. The event's keynote speakers that include A.P. Davenport, M. Hoang, T. Kido, H. Funke-Kaiser and L.N. Pierre discussed topics such as the controversy between the subcellular localization of endothelin converting enzymes (ECEs), the site of physiological activation of big ET-1 and the enhancements in the structure-activity relations of ECE-1.

Endothelin receptors cloned, endothelin converting enzyme characterized and pathophysiological roles for endothelin proposed
Article Abstract:
Endothelin was found to influence cardiovascular regulation through vasoconstriction. This physiological effect suggested that introduction of specific inhibitors such as endothelin-1 (ET-1) converting enzymes could lead to the treatment of hypertension and similar vascular ailments. Further identification of endothelin-caused physiological responses required the formation of specific receptor antagonists. In addition, studies involving pulmonary vessels and haemangio-endothelioma tumor showed the possible pathophysiological activitty of ET-1.

Endothelin: progress in pharmacology and physiology
Article Abstract:
Research advances have been made in the study of endothelin pharmacology and physiology. These findings include the discovery of peptide vasoconstrictors which conditioned rapid cloning of receptor subtypes and the development of specific receptor agonists and antagonists. In addition, endothelin has exhibited a vital role in cardiovascular and renal function regulation and in diseases where it acts as a contributory agent.
