GERMANY: STAGNATION IN COATINGS INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
According to Manfred Schneider, chairman of Bayer AG and president of the German chemical industry association VCI, the German industry produced about 2mn tonnes of paints and varnishes in year 2000, unchanged from 1999. In value terms, production increased slightly to DM 9bn. The production of architectural paints, which account for 70% of production, declined by about 2%, and the negative trend is expected to continue. The production of industrial paints, on the other hand, increased by 3-5%. Growth in this segment is likely to slow down in year 2001. Germany's exports of paints and varnishes increased 5% to 430,000 tonnes, while imports grew 10% to just under 100,000 tonnes.
