Nitric oxide: inducer or suppressor of apoptosis?
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide (NO), in its various chemical forms, has the most diverse action among the molecules involved in cell signalling. A study on the general signalling mechanisms that pertain to the role of NO in physiology and pathophysiological reactions and the understanding that S-nitrosylation reactions can mediate both physiological activation and adaptive stress responses have elicited the concept that NO can suppress or induce apoptosis, the natural cell death program. NO can either activate or suppress apoptosis in post-mitotic adult neurones, in various cell lines and in the upregulations of the tumor suppressor gene p53 and iNOS.

Investigation of vascular mechanisms: bridging the gap between basic research and clinical trials
Article Abstract:
Ways to study vascular pharmacology or the effects of drugs on the function of various organs and organ systems are presented. Direct, local intra-arterial drug infusion has provided the means to see the effects of drugs on the vascular endothelium. Venous occlusion pletysmography with local drug infusions have also shown the interaction of local mediators, circulating hormones and sympathetic nerves with potential vasoactive drugs.
