SWITZERLAND: AXANTIS SUCCESSFUL WITH CELLULOSE
Article Abstract:
Swiss Riedholz-based Axantis Holding (formerly Attisholz) expects the cellulose producer Atisholz AG to generate an operating profit of about SFr 30mn in the financial year to 30 September 2001. Axantis is concluding a 2-year investment programme in the production of refined cellulose, which makes the company less dependent on the volatile markets for paper-making pulp. The company has so far delivered twice as much cellulose to the polymer industry as originally planned, and successful tests have been carried out by companies converting Atisholz cellulose into derivatives for the food, pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics industries. Axantis is to spend SFr 25mn on the refining of high-quality yeast as a by-product from cellulose production, using a fermentation technology development within the group. Axantis has more than SFr 400mn in its coffers for expansion in the field of biotechnology. This involves own research and development, acquisitions, and cooperation arrangements. In financial year 1999/2000 Axantis Holding is likely to double its pre-tax profit to more than SFr 30mn, while turnover growth is estimated at 2% to SFr 148mn.
