SWITZERLAND: VIFOR TO EXTEND SITE IN ST. GALLEN

Swiss producer of pharmaceutical iron preparations Vifor International AG will invest SFr 30mn in extending its site in St. Gallen. The subsidiary of Galenica AG targets to carry out the extension in steps until 2005. Vifor plans to add ten staff to its present 110 workforce by the end of 2001. Vifor had acquired the site in St. Gallen from B. Braun Medical in 1999.

SWITZERLAND: NEW BIOMATERIAL FOR MEDICINE
Article Abstract:
A new biomaterial developed at the Zurich Polytechnic, ETH Zurich, in Switzerland is to be tested in pre-clinical studies. The material based on fibrin was successfully used to repair injuries to nerves. It is said that treatment by electrostatic binding of substances to proteins might be an option also in the regeneration of bone and skin tissue.

GERMANY: NEW BETA-INTERFERON DEVELOPED
Article Abstract:
A beta-interferon of the second generation has been developed at the Fraunhofer Institute IGB in Stuttgart, Germany. A patent application has been filed for the technology with improved solubility, which is based on hydrophobic engineering. Beside the treatment of multiple sclerosis, it could be used in other indications as well.
