ACT-SO showcasing the best and the brightest
Article Abstract:
The National Assn for the Advancement of Colored Peoples' Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) showcases the best, boldest and brightest young African-Americans. The ACT-SO is a year-long program which provides mentoring and coaching to African-American students in various academic and artistic pursuits. The program culminates in local and national competitions. The ACT-O's main aim is to motivate and inspire students to achieve more academically and to show them that studying hard and practicing long hours deserve as much recognition as sports and music.

ACT-SO jewels shine brightest during national competition
Article Abstract:
The 1992 Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) awards were presented at the 83rd NAACP Annual Convention held at Nashville, TN, in 1992. The ACT-SO competition was founded by the Chicago Sun-Times journalist Vernon Jarrett in 1991 with the aim of attracting black youths to display their hidden talents in academics and performing arts. Although the program was not successful in the beginning, ACT-SO competition has now become the most popular youth-event among American audiences.

The rise and fall of Freedom National Bank
Article Abstract:
Huge financial losses caused by mismanagement resulted in the 1990 closure of Freedom National Bank. The bank, which was established in 1964 by Jackie Robinson, Dunbar McLaurin and a group of black community leaders, incurred heavy losses from bad loans and from speculating in high-risk mortgage-backed securities. Originally intended as a community bank, the institution started to resemble an investment bank after undergoing successive reorganizations.
