Environment and security: core ideas and US government initiatives
Article Abstract:
Global environmental issues should be approached through a combination of several disciplines with a focus on long-term strategies. Policymakers should set global environmental goals not only in terms of security issues but also on value-oriented considerations such as aesthetics, human responsibility for the earth and humanitarian issues. It is important to note that the security approach to the environment most often adopted by developed countries only deals with aspects such as instability and conflict in geostrategically important areas.

National environmental policy planning in OECD countries: preliminary lessons from cross-national comparisons
Article Abstract:
There is as yet no standardized model for strategic environmental planning in OECD countries. However, a number of general characteristics can be identified. In some cases, there are strong sectoral and regional plans within a wider national environmental framework, while in other cases there are formalized policy statements with clear environmental targets. Most existing green plans are pilot strategies, with a significant number of deficits. In many cases, these plans are rather non-committal, as they do not have a strong basis in law.
