Always just over the horizon: the East German intellectual and the elusive public sphere
Article Abstract:
The East German Communist party spokesman Erich Honnecker introduced widespread censorship of the arts in his 11th Plenary in Dec 1965, following a brief relaxation of censorship at the beginning of 1965. The article examines the aims and objectives of the works written in the short period before the Plenary which restricted public expression. Films by Frank Beyer and Herman Zschoche focused on the lot of the woman under communist rule. All works of the intellectuals showed that the human characteristic greed always overwhelms socialism.

The case of Markus Wolf
Article Abstract:
The conviction of Markus Wolf by the Central Federal Court of Germany for treason against Federal Republic has raised issues of the legality of the case. The fact that treason can be committed only by a citizen against his own state makes the judgement look absurd. Wolf was not a citizen of the Federal Republic. Wolf, in his statement to the court, decried the judgement and did not admit to the crime. This statement is included.
