A study of the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh's novel about St Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, is presented. Waugh's interest in the fourth century Catholic Church, the influence of the Roman Empire and Helena's virtue is examined.

A study of the ideological perspectives contained in James Fenimore Cooper's European novels of the early 19th century is presented. His use of chronological sequences to describe perceived violations of natural law is studied.
