Shame and gloom as everyone loses in Armenia
Article Abstract:
The Armenian government of President Ter-Petrosian may need to work hard to convince the world that it is serious about establishing democracy. Ter-Petrosian's narrow re-election win in September prompted charges of corruption from his opponent. While he has provided Armenia with stability since breaking from the Soviet Union in 1991, he has suppressed opposition. Demonstrations against Ter-Petrosian after the recent election may have persuaded him to reexamine and change his image.

Armenia's new autocrats
Article Abstract:
The Armenian National Movement has transformed itself from being the state's hero in its bid for freedom from the Soviet Union into Armenia's new autocrats. The party has taken a stranglehold on the Armenian government in its bid to gain political hegemony and its accompanying financial benefits, thwarting the country's democratization and economic reform. Opposition to the dictatorial ruling party can only come from a coalition of the underclass and from a revitalized middle class.

Hunger and the global agenda: who wins, who loses, who cares?
Article Abstract:
The adoption of free trade policies throughout the world may not allow poor farmers to increase their profits or end their hunger. The United Nation's World Food Summit, meeting in November 1996, has declared that liberal trade markets will cut by half the number of people going hungry within 10 years. International organizations should invite representatives of the hungry to join them in solving inequalities in current food and trade policies.
