Asian values did not cause the meltdown
Article Abstract:
The financial collapse in Asia cannot be attributed to cronyism and other similar practices. Although many Asian countries may be guilty of such practices, Asian attitudes have remained the same even during the time of the great Asian Economic miracle. The financial crisis can be attributed to the unequal capabilities among financial systems in most Asian countries. East Asian economies have achieved a seven to nine percent economic growth during the mid 1980s and early 1990s. This caused an influx of capital into Asian economies from foreign sources. This caused asset bubbles in Asian stock markets and ultimately widening of current account deficits when the US dollar appreciated in mid-1995.

Hong Kong is destined to lose its Western gloss
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong stands to gradually lose its image as a cosmopolitan city after its turnover to China in Jul 1997. Constant exchanges with China will eventually and unwittingly lead Hong Kong's leaders back to Chinese culture. However, a firm and unyielding chief executive and an efficient civil system may avert such a possibility. The new chief executive must be able to convince China's detractors in the US that Hong Kong is a separate administrative entity from the mainland, while earning and maintaining the confidence of China's leaders. He should also preserve Hong Kong's freedoms and liberties.

Present at Hong Kong decolonization
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's future under Chinese rule will depend both on Chinese government and on the people of Hong Kong. Key administrative institutions, which were mandated by the Joint Declaration on the handover, are already in place. It is up to the Chinese government now to uphold these institutions and not interfere with Hong Kong's politics. The democratic forces in Hong Kong should reciprocate this grant of autonomy by preventing Hong Kong from being used as a base for activities aiming to subvert China's political system.
