Austria's new government - fresh start or swan-song?
Article Abstract:
Austria's elections of Oct 9, 1994, dealt the ruling Socialist Party/People's Party coalition a stinging setback thanks in part to an imaginative campaign by Jorg Haider and the Freedom Party. The other minor parties, the Greens and Liberals, also made significant gains. The election leaves the coalition partners in dire need of successes, and they are counting heavily on Austria's new membership in the European Union to produce an economic turnaround. Haider's hand is increasingly strong both at home and abroad.

Austria: the end of an era
Article Abstract:
Austria's Waldheim era came to an end with the succession of Thomas Klestil to the presidency on May 24, 1992. Klestil enjoyed the backing of the Christian Democratic People's Party, but conducted his own low-key campaign. His opponent was the Social Democrat Rudolf Streicher. Few ideological differences separated Klestil and Streicher, and the former's victory can perhaps partially be explained by charisma. Klestil plans to promote Austrian membership in the EC.
