Beyond the Enlightenment
Article Abstract:
The major trends of the Enlightenment thought of the 18th century are unclear, since some major questions in science remains unanswered. Two conferences organized by the Claremont Institute in 1991 and a third in 1992 tried to clear the limitations of Enlightenment. Scholars focused on the differences between 'continental' and 'shallower' Enlightenment. They identified it as a concept of reason provoking the pursuit of truth. In the second conference limitations of science were discussed, while the 1992 one focused on the directions mankind might turn to in the 21st century.

Beyond the pale
Article Abstract:
Ireland was a champion of the imagination. William Yeats attacked the Enlightenment as not having seen the world through the eyes of a saint or drunkard. He wished Ireland to avoid the dangers of mass culture. Materialism has an emptiness that leads to despair. Irish bookshops and pubs retain humanity and succeed in halting time. Ireland can endow a sense of identity and being part of a place. People without traditions and a past can be more easily manipulated.

Clearing the misty Celtic fog
Article Abstract:
There is a significant amount of sentimentality surrounding Irish culture. This serves to attract tourists, but has a negative impact on artistic activity. It is important to see Ireland as a spiritual entity, but not in the pseudo-mystical sense of the Anglo-Irish Literary Revival.
