Buddhism, Asian values and democracy
Article Abstract:
The Dalai Lama states that the concept and practice of democracy is not alien to Buddhism. The importance of the individual in a democracy is also central to Buddhism, which emphasizes personal effort in the actualization of human potential. Consensus, which is an integral part of decision-making in a democracy, is also practiced in Buddhist monastic orders. The ethical and political values underlying democracy are universal, making them applicable to any religious system, including Buddhism.
