China: is the 'open door' about to close?
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has begun to reassert its control over the economy resulting in the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the foreign investors. This is evident in the state control over oil trade and domestic prices. CCP believe that the foreign investment could not deliver the expected results. It has surprised many as privatization in China was reported to improve the country's energy scenario. There have been some high profile disputes between the state companies and foreign investors. The state sector is expected to play major role in the oil sector in future.

Japan: energy security to the fore
Article Abstract:
Japan was adversely affected by the interruption in oil supplies due to the 1990 Persian Gulf crisis and this spurred the country's concern with its energy security. As a result the country is increasing oil stockpiling, trying to forge long-term economic connections with oil exporting countries and looking into refining joint ventures. The country is also looking for countries outside the Middle East which might become energy suppliers, and China looks like the best Asian possibility. Japan may also try to cut its oil consumption.

Scrambling for oil in Asia
Article Abstract:
Asian countries are ensuring their energy security by trying to secure oil and gas resources in their own area rather than depending on international oil markets. Japan is an example of the trend among Asia's richest countries to fund exploration and production efforts on foreign soil. Asia's poorer countries are developing energy reserves at home. One example is China, which has decided to permit oil exploration in the South China Sea. Asia's economy grew during the 1980s and energy consumption grew along with it.
