Civil society in Syria: Illegal but working
Article Abstract:
Former member of parliament and businessman turned opposition leader, Riad Seif, who was released from a five-year prison term in mid-January 2006 had played the major role in a watershed moment in the early days of President Bashar Al Assad's reign which briefly bloomed with political debates, publications and petitions amongst urban liberals. The Liberal Party which Seid and his fellow exprisoners wanted to establish was ambitious and calls for a multi-party democratic system and seeks a membership with over half under the age of forty.

Cloud of suspicion
Article Abstract:
An initial UN fact-finding report was needed when the Lebanese leader and editor, Gebrane Tueni, was assassinated, as the Lebanese investigation was flawed. It reported political involvement in the assassination but proper investigation, convincing evidence and a fair trial would lead to the identification of those responsible.
