Clarifying India's nascent nuclear doctrine
Article Abstract:
It is important to reconcile the stated US nuclear non-proliferation concerns with India's national security goals, according to Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh. He expresses a wish for India and the US to become involved in regular discussions on a number of matters concerning bilateral, regional and global political and economic issues. He feels that many Indians regard the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as an element of a discriminatory, nuclear non-proliferation regime, but emphasizes that the government's commitment to nuclear non-proliferation is unchanged.

JASON nuclear testing study
Article Abstract:
The report of the JASON committee, which studied the U.S. nuclear testing program, led to the announcement by the US that it would support a strict no-testing or 'zero threshold' by rejecting a Pentagon proposal to set up a permitted threshold of one-half kiloton. The US has affirmed confidence in the safety, reliability, and performance margins of the nuclear weapons which are meant for enduring accumulation. The findings are in keeping with the U.S. policy to enter into Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

How much more nuclear testing do we need?
Article Abstract:
The Bush administration has long justified its stand against any ban on nuclear weapons testing by claiming that such tests are needed to ensure their safety and reliability. However, the US nuclear weapons stockpile does not need to be tested, and all problems can be detected and corrected in pre-deployment evaluations. In addition, the safety of nuclear weapons can be assured by the installation of new safety devices and by the retirement of older weapons systems which are found to be unsafe.
