Clinton vetoes sanctions bill; sets, imposes new sanctions on Russia
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration is planning to impose new sanctions on seven Russian companies for arms transfers to Iran and other countries even as Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin signed into law new regulations that would strengthen the country's export control regime. The House of Representatives postponed an override of Pres Bill Clinton's veto of a bill to sanction firms that aid Iran's ballistic missile program following the White House announcement and Yeltsin's move. The sanctions are part of US efforts to prevent the export of missile technology from Russia to Iran.

India, Pakistan test new missiles; US urges restraint
Article Abstract:
Test flights have been carried out of ballistic missiles with nuclear capabilities, by Pakistan and India. These tests follow nuclear tests by both countries in 1998. The tests have been condemned by Australia and japan, and China is concerned that an arms race could be triggered in the region. India denies that there is a danger or an arms race, as does Pakistan. The US has used restraint in its criticism of the tests and wants discussions on a stable minimum deterrent.
