US-Chinese relations strained over Taiwan

The continuing difficulties between China and Taiwan have caused a breach in the improving relations between China and the United States. China plans reunification with Taiwan whilst the US supports Taiwan's independence.

Article Abstract:
A white paper released by China in Feb 2000 extended the conditions under which it would use force to reunify Taiwan and China. The paper was issued after the US passed pro-Taiwan legislation and before an upcoming presidential election in Taiwan.
