Democracy and liberty: the cultural connection
Article Abstract:
The undermining of human liberties in modern democracies is attributed to illiberal cultural settings that perpetuate human rights abuses through electoral democracy. The coexistence of democracy and human rights abuses in Algeria underlines the significance of cultural variables in the diffusion of human rights. The democracy-liberty link is evident in the Western political culture of Enlightenment which focuses on individual prosperity. The import of electoral institutions into illiberal non-Western democracies has perpetuated the suppression of individual human rights for community rights.
