Democracy in the risk society? Learning from the new politics of mobility in Munich
Article Abstract:
There is a view that greater democracy will help in achieving sustainable development, and this has led to calls for greater public participation in policy making. The case of transportation policy in Munich, Germany, questions this view. New democratic practices have been introduced, but this has not necessarily helped a move toward greater sustainability, rather democratic practices may be counterproductive. There is still a case for experimenting with democratic practices in that they can provide new ideas, new players, and democracy is desirable in itself.

The European Union's environmental agenda
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) is taking over roles that were previously confined to domestic politics, so the influences on policy development and its directions are important. This is true for the EU's environmental policy, and the evaluation and selection of different policy alternatives to tackle environmental problems. The issues involved have been tackled in three works which all contribute to our understanding of the issues of agenda setting and policy development, to varying degrees.
