Detente, security and technology
Article Abstract:
The end of the Cold War has transformed the fields of military and civilian technological research. Military technologies, which were designed for the bipolar conflict between the superpowers will likely be supplanted by more flexible civilian technologies. However, such military technologies as satellite surveillance and communication, ballistic missiles and nuclear development promise to find application in the civilian sector. The civilian sector is expected to lead the field of research, while the military will borrow from that sector on a selective basis.

Global security in the 21st century: Circulation, complexity and contingency
Article Abstract:
Global security in the 21st century poses a major problem in terms of circulation, complexity and contingency whereby their connectedness poses dangers in terms of the speed and ferocity with which perturbations within them can cascade into major disasters. Circulation, contingency and complexity represent a cognitive shift in thinking about global security as much as a profound transformation of global society.
