Article Abstract:
United Nations Development Program 2002 report estimated that 23,000 respiratory deaths, 13,000 fatal heart disease cases and fifteen million cases of bronchitis could be attributed to air pollution in that year. For this purpose, environmental experts are involved in a planning process that would enhance decision-making and create more transparency, reducing the power of local officials and providing the basis for strengthening the rule of law.

Widespread European consumer concern over the safety of genetically engineered food may sour trade relations between Europe and the US, the leading proponent of the biotechnology industry. Public pressure to reform biotechnology regulation has led the European Union to propose international biosafety standards. However, the biotechnology industry in the US expects free trade principles will outweigh environmental concerns.
