Eight problems with African politics
Article Abstract:
There is a collective skepticism regarding African democratization. This is due to the perceived weakness of political parties, government interference in elections, lack of political choices, political disenchantment, lack of press freedom, the absence of civility, warlordism and international support for dictatorships. Consolidation of African democracies can be achieved by resolving past conflicts, restoring legitimacy, showing more compassion, broadening political choices and ensuring the neutrality of armed forces.

Africa: an interim balance sheet
Article Abstract:
The interim balance sheet of the African democratization process projects a mixed scenario with the positive side being favored slightly. The legitimacy crisis of the autocratic state along with the international conjuncture of 1990 led to the third wave of democratization in Africa. The transition to democracy has been slow and uneven and in some cases it has lost its initial momentum. Reforms such as freer and vocal press, respect for human rights, and some semblance of the rule of law have taken place.

The surprising significance of African elections
Article Abstract:
Elections were hailed as the hallmark of democracy and expectations from what elections can accomplish were especially high among democracy-promotion agencies, many of which focus on supporting elections. An analysis of more than two hundred third-wave elections in Africa showed that an uninterrupted series of competitive elections imbues society with certain democratic qualities and repeated elections appeared to have a positive impact on human freedom and democratic values.
