Democracy in the Americas
Article Abstract:
Practically all nations in the Western hemisphere are enjoying a democratic government. Governments, which are chosen through elections, are divided into the executive, legislative and judicial branches. There is respect for human rights although there are some imperfections in its practice. Democracy in the Americas has many shortcomings. These shortcomings are in the form of structural, cultural and institutional weaknesses.

The life of Professor Seymour Martin Lipset as a contributor to political science and sociology is described, thus reflecting his practical moral awareness, understanding of leadership, and his love of democracy as the best form of government ever devised. Professor Lipset's views were straightforward and explained the relative backwardness of Latin America.

The author acknowledges that while democracy alone cannot end inequality or injustice, it nevertheless establishes the best conditions for a society to make progress in achieving these goals.
