Embarrassing guests
Article Abstract:
The embarrassing case of Saudi dissident Muhammad al-Massaari, who while granted asylum in the UK continued to publicly criticize the Saudi regime, led to Saudi Arabia pressuring the UK to silence or expel him. Plans to deport him to Dominica were later aborted and Saudi pressure has since eased. Democracies are extremely limited in their abilities to curb the activities of political refugees by considerations of principle, law and their national interests. The UK needs to adopt the US system of deciding political asylum, which is solely judicial, not political in nature.

Actions not words
Article Abstract:
The Darfur conflict is a shocking indictment of the international community's failure to protect the vulnerable against genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The reasons behind the world's most powerful nations to fulfill the promises made in New York in 2005 are discussed, and it is suggested that if they do want to protect the victims of brutality, wherever they are, their words must be followed by principled actions.
