Governing institutions for sustainable development: the United Kingdom's national level approach
Article Abstract:
The UK has achieved little in the way of changing its policies and administrative cultures towards the requirements of sustainable development. This is because of the lack of consensus on the definition of the term, conservatism in the performance of administrative functions, the political risks involved in interfering with the tax regime, the haphazard response to sustainable development and the impracticality of involving citizens in policy making. However, there is a growing interest in sustainable development and its indicators across different organizations.

The political economy of sustainable development
Article Abstract:
Sustainable economic development in Europe has gone beyond merely focusing on environmental concerns to encompass political, economic and social issues as the continent moves towards increasing decentralization and federation. However, European sustainable development is faced with problems that include the lack of a unifying vision to channel political, economic and social efforts into the desired economic outcome and the potential conflict between the demands of economic globalization and the privatization of government assets and services.

Beyond the early stages of the sustainability transition
Article Abstract:
Sustainable development, which aims for the creation of wealth while safeguarding the environment and empowering communities, can only be achieved by coordinating institutional innovations. This would provide a unified channel by which sustainable development efforts can be carried out. This requires stronger political commitment, more effective political leadership, more extensive mobilization, more participation by the business sector and improvements in the indicators of sustainable development.
