Influences on deficit spending in industrialized democracies
Article Abstract:
Six theories on the deficit spending of industrialized democracies are analyzed. The first two are the tax-smoothing and neo-Keynesian hypotheses. The third focuses on the increase of deficits at the expense of future generations. The last three considers the political ideology of the party in power, the strength of party power, and the weakness of divided government. It is argued that these theories do not take into account the effects of institutional structure on budgetary politics.

Is equality good medicine? Determinants of life expectancy in industrialized democracies
Article Abstract:
Low levels of income inequality are connected with shorter life expectancy and as inequality increases, life expectancy increases until it reaches a point where further increases in inequality lead to decreases in life expectancy. It is found that the life expectancy of populations is driven by factors such as perceived political control, the generosity of the welfare state, life-styles, GDP per capita and the poverty rate.
