Iraq strikes deal on inspections at special sites
Article Abstract:
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan prevented the planned bombing campaign by the US against Iraq by arbitrating an 11-hour negotiation with Iraqi Pres Saddam Hussein. The seven-part memorandum of understanding (MOU) consummated during the negotiation outlines special inspection procedures for seven presidential sites, which Hussein previously declared off-limits to inspectors from the Intenational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM). The MOU states that inspections will have to be implemented by a Special Group consisting of delegates from IAEA and UNSCOM and diplomats handpicked by Annan.

UN maintains sanctions on Iraq as Security Council split grows
Article Abstract:
Contradicting reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM), which were tasked to investigate disarmament in Iraq, has led the UN Security Council to retain its sanctions on Baghdad for another six months. In its report, the IAEA claimed that Iraq was adequately cooperative, thus concluding that all weapons of mass destruction have been satisfactorily accounted for. However, the UNSCOM reports that there was no improvement in the inventory process due to the inspection crisis and Baghdad's continued resistance.
