Irving Babbitt and Lin Yutang
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that Lin Yutang, who lived between 1895 and 1976, was the most significant of Irving Babbitt's students at Harvard after T.S. Eliot. Lin did not regard himself as one of Babbitt's disciples, but he derived significant benefits from Babbitt's influence. The key element of Lin's reminiscences of Harvard is his defence of J.E. Spingarn against Babbitt. This issue is very closely linked with Lin's comments regarding Chinese notions of literary style. Lin both complimented Babbitt and expressed some of his key ethical concepts.

The consistency of Irving Babbitt
Article Abstract:
Irving Babbitt's 'Rousseau and Romanticism' is written in a simple style, with fine humor, and reveals the difference in principles between Babbitt and Pound. Eliot often referred to Babbitt and Pound together, and to him they were models of 'the rebellious Protestant' who opposes native culture to engage in universal cultures. It is the basic and romantic heart that leads to the discovery of self that Babbitt tries to arrive at through his works.
