Pakistan in turmoil
Article Abstract:
Pakistan is in a confused political situation which may eventually have serious political and economic ramifications. The Pakistani president, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, has dismissed Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister, accusing him of subversion and corruption. Khan has also dissolved the National Assembly. Khan took similar action against Benazir Bhutto, Sharif's predecessor in 1990. Khan and Sharif had been close at first but problems developed when Sharif became more assertive and tried to play the part of a great statesman on the international scene.

Article Abstract:
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in Dec 1979 may be viewed as the greatest mistake made by the Soviet Union since the establishment of Communism. The invasion showed Western nations that the Soviet Union was not interested in preserving detente. The Soviet Union was forced to reevaluate its foreign policy as a result of the Afghan crisis. This invasion proved that it was no longer feasible to use religious fundamentalism to confront Communism.
