The Southern African Customs Union in a changing economic and political environment
Article Abstract:
The Southern African Customs Union has not fit the typical format of regional economic integration. The relationship between South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland has been one of convenience and the primary beneficiary has been the larger economy of South Africa. Development, or the lack thereof, in the smaller economies has been orchestrated by South Africa. Increased economic development will depend on the expansion of integration and cooperation within the region as South Africa becomes less of an outcast in the global community.

The Treaty of Asuncion: an analysis
Article Abstract:
The 1991 Treaty of Asuncion, establishing a common market between Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, seeks to encourage trade, investment and economic integration. However, economic inequities between the member nations may hinder the pact's success. The new market has signed a trade agreement with the US, which will provide investment. A positive aspect of the treaty is its commitment to negotiation of disputes, although it is uncertain how binding any negotiated settlements will be.
