This article discusses European Union plans to decide policy regarding immigration and political asylum. The EU needs to address problems of illegal immigration and organized crime, and to acknowledge the root causes of these issues, the underdevelopment and political instability of some European countries.

Political refugees are becoming less welcome in many European countries for economic and social reasons, and this is reflected in the more restrictive laws to their entry. Efforts to improve the laws for legal entry and help make citizens more accepting of refugees are examined.
