More than forty million people worldwide are believed to be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its devastating impact keeps increasing, primarily in developing and emerging countries. The unprecedented international mobilization and major progress in the early years of the 21st century remains insufficient compared with the scale of the threats as the epidemic evolves together with the changing complexity of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) crisis.
