The process of NATO and European Union expansion has far reaching implications for the economic and political future of Europe. International leaders have worked hard to create a stable foundation for the European Union but with expansions come increased risks of alienating other countries and slipping into old Cold War divisions. Issues of security and the US's role in European relations must also be addressed quickly.

The process shall be accelerated by the activities of the EC rather than the Western-influenced NATO. The chief task before Germany is to resolve the eco-political deadlock between the East and West, but the country remains a reluctant leader.
