Nicaragua: is the revolution over?
Article Abstract:
The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) defeated by the United Nicaraguan Opposition (UNO) in the Feb 1990 elections still has power but is suffering from structural and ideological problems. It is doubtful that the FSLN will ever have as strong a majority has it had when it won the 1984 elections with 67% of the electorate's vote. The FSLN was established in 1961 and evolved into a nationalist, Marxist and religious political group. Under its power land was redistributed to the peasants. The UNO has pledged to maintain land boundaries but land disputes threatens law and order.
