"No-party democracy" in Uganda
Article Abstract:
Uganda's National Resistance Movement has organized three national elections since its introduction in 1986. Each election, held in all villages, was observed to be fairer, more democratic and more open than the 1980 election. Pres Yoweri Museveni won over 70% of the votes in the 1996 no-party presidential election, defeating Paul Ssemogerere by a landslide. Most Ugandans see Museveni's victory as a validation to no-party democracy manifested by his landslide win and by Ssemogerere's willingness to support the Uganda People's Congress, the party which he formerly accused of cheating the Democratic Party.

Museveni's machinations
Article Abstract:
After the reelection in 2001, Yoweri Museveni initiated a series of administrative and legal actions to ensure that his tenure would continue after 2006. Museveni clearly hopes to secure an extension of his presidency by sacrificing the movement system and a degree of central control.
