Orphans of transition: gypsies in Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
Eastern Europe is the place of residence for six million gypsies, a marginalized group which has no home state. This marginalization of the gypsies has social, political and economic overtones. During the communist regime, their plight is somewhat improved with compulsory education, compulsory employment and health care coverage despite some damaging effects of socialist policies. The emergence of democracy in Eastern Europe is threatening the gains made by gypsies. There is a need for emerging governments and gypsies to work together to address their mutual concerns.
